Military Aircraft Maintenance Jobs - "Aviation is getting bigger, faster and more advanced," said Brian Finnegan, president of the Aviation Maintenance Association. While major US airlines struggle, major airlines and smaller aircraft manufacturers are looking for new talent to work as aircraft mechanics as the workforce ages.
"We see a lot of opportunity - it's coming back in spades," he said. With developments such as large and small aircraft in the air, the industry is more flexible and requires machines that can keep up with the ever-changing technology.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 154,000 aircraft mechanics work in the United States, and the BLS divides the job into four categories:
Opportunities Run Sky High For Aircraft Mechanics
Look for established schools that require at least 1,900 hours of class and have an acceptance rate of 70 percent or more, says Don Newton, director of the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA). Newton recommends looking for schools with higher than average requirements. "You want to go beyond the basics," he said. "See what kind of hands-on training they provide."
These schools provide students with basic classroom skills, such as understanding electrical codes and reading blueprints, as well as practical work. "A good school will incorporate the latest technology with FAA requirements," Newton said.
A high school diploma or equivalent is required to enroll in aviation school, but no previous experience is required. "I've seen some kids with no mechanical experience come out with a really good job," said Bryan Tobias, a mechanic pilot appointed by the Federal Aviation Administration.
"If you want to be an aircraft mechanic, you can't just go off-road," Tobias said. So when you finish school, you should try for a certificate. Although testing is not a job requirement, it is preferred by employers. "A mechanic's license holder is not limited to working on aircraft or special maintenance jobs," he said. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires 18 months of work experience for an airframe repair, power plant or avionics certificate and 30 months for an airframe/power plant certificate.

Completion of a program at an FAA-certified mechanic school can replace work experience. Attending one of the 200 mechanic schools in the United States is the most common way to break into the industry; however, veterans who demonstrate good conduct can take the test for certification, as can those with reasonable knowledge but no training.
The test consists of a series of tests on the computer, followed by spending a day with a certified examiner. The candidate then works on practical projects covering 44 topics from small commuter aircraft to Boeing jet aircraft.
Once you get the license, what you do depends on your interests. "You have large aircraft, commuter aircraft, engine builders or fixed-wing operators anywhere in the country and around the world," Newton said. You can work in line maintenance at airports, where you go to a plane at the gate, or you can work in helicopters, as part of a team at big airports or buy a building where you fix a small plane yourself . "Right now, I'm seeing small carriers picking up new people for $14 to $15 an hour," Tobias said.
Wherever you go, don't expect to work 9-to-5. "The work is often outside and at night," said Finnegan. "Mechanical athletes are those who climb stairs and work in small spaces. You need character."
